How Does The Every Other Day Diet Work?

In a nutshell, you are literally eating the foods you like like on your “feed days”, and dieting on the “burn days”.

The program is formulated to decrease caloric intake  and burn body fat without compromising your body’s metabolic rate.  Jon Benson calls it “interval eating” & “planned variance” AKA caloric cycling

What is caloric cycling?

Caloric cycling has been around for some time, and is simply a way of maintaining a fast metabolism by tricking your body into thinking that calories are not being restricted, when in reality they are.

The big benefit of using caloric cycling is that your body’s metabolic rate will not decrease like it does with traditional diets.  This will ensure that your body maintains it’s efficiency and continues to burn body fat at a fast rate.

The “Every Other Day Diet” is simple to follow because it is broken down to diet days and non-diet days.

As mentioned previously, Jon calls these “burn days” and “feed days”.  During the burn days, you eat only 30-50% of the number of calories your body’s daily caloric requirement .  During the feed days, you consume up to 150% of your caloric requirement.  As long as you stick to the portion size recommendations, you are free to eat whatever foods you like on these feed days.

Determining portion size is also easy by using Jon’s “HOME” method (Hands on Method of Food Eating) where you use different parts of your hands to estimate portion size for different types of food.

Are There Any Food Restrictions On The Every Other Day Diet?

One of the great things about The Every Other Day Diet is that it is extremely flexible.  Jon has three different variations of the diet that you can follow

Those three variations are:

  1. Primer – Most flexible option, can eat anything at all on your feed days.
  2. Lifestyle – This is what Jon calls the “maintenance” program, and he recommends that this is followed in order to see the best long term results.  Things get a little more strict here, with only a couple of feed days.
  3. Extreme – Meant for very aggressive fat loss and muscle gains.  This is the most advanced option, and would not be recommended for beginners.

The vast majority of you will never need the extreme program.  Jon recommends that most people begin with the “primer” phase, and then progress to the “lifestyle” phase once you have reached your weight loss goals.

Who Is Jon Benson Anyway?

Jon is a well respected fitness expert who has been around for quite some time, but more importantly the guy really practices what he preaches.  Although you would never have believed it by looking at him now, he was once very unhealthy and overweight.  The Every Other Day Diet incorporates the exact same methods that he used to drop an impressive 70 Lbs.  (see picture at right).

Does The Every Other Day Diet Work?

Short answer yes with an S, long answer no with a but…

Jon is very straight up and emphasizes that there are three conditions that must be met in order to succeed with this program.

Those conditions are:

  1. Persistence & Dedication – This goes for any weight loss diet really.  In order to be successful, you have to work hard and follow your plan daily.  You can’t take a week off here and there and expect to see decent results.
  2. Regular Exercise – In order to see great results, you have to exercise.  You can’t sit around on the couch and expect the diet alone to do it’s thing.  Sure it will help, but in order to keep your metabolism going you have to get moving on a daily basis.
  3. Realistic Expectations – Don’t expect to lose 20 pounds in a week with this diet.  Part of the reason it works is because it helps you burn fat (not muscle) at a realistic pace.  Losing 1.5-2 lbs a week of pure body fat should be expected with this diet, and any diet that promises more than that is not healthy and will not work over the long term.

Putting It All Together

After evaluating The Every Other Day Diet, here is the conclusion that I have come up with:

  • It’s easy to follow and makes sense from a scientific standpoint
  • The program is flexible, and is great for those tired of traditional diets that don’t allow you to eat foods that you like
  • The bonuses that Jon includes with the program are excellent resources
  • This type of diet will help you lose weight, but more importantly maintain that weight loss for life

If you are ready for something different that will help you lose weight, Jon Benson’s Every Other Day diet is an excellent investment.  Keep eating the foods you love and lose weight.  It really doesn’t get any better than that…
